Europeana and parts of its network receive funding under the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) programme of the European Union for the Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure (DSI). The project duration is one year only, for each following year, Europeana has to submit a new proposal that needs to be approved by the Commission. Theoretically, CEF funding for Europeana and its network partners is available until 2020 max.
EFG, as the aggregator for the film archives domain, is represented in the Europeana DSI consortium through ACE and Deutsches Filminstitut (DIF), which coordinated EFG and EFG1914. So far, three DSI projects were granted by the Commission:
– Europeana DSI 1 (April 2015 – June 2016)
– Europeana DSI 2 (July 2016 – August 2017)
– Europeana DSI 3 (September 2017 – August 2018)
Visit Europeana Pro for more information about DSI 3.
Europeana DSI 1 (April 2015-June 2016)
The funding will allow for the maintenance of the EFG portal as well as the integration of new partners and the metadata improvement of existing partners.
Under CEF, as within the EFG projects, ACE is mainly responsible for dissemination and networking activities, while DIF receives funding to continue its coordinating activities around EFG (i.e. contacting and arranging metadata contributions of new partners, monitoring data ingestions of existing partners, supervision of data enrichment activities, etc.). The ACE budget includes a sub-contract budget of 42,000 EUR reserved for film archives interested in enriching data for and/or contributing (further) data to EFG.
CEF funding for Europeana and its aggregators is mainly provided to ensure the continued operation of the Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure (DSI), to help Europeana innovate their aggregation infrastructure, to boost their distribution channels as well as to work towards a long-term financial stability through business model innovation focusing on funding sources other than CEF.
During the the EFG information meeting in Bologna on 3rd July 2015, the EFG partners and the ACE network members have been informed about the Europeana DSI framework, the role of ACE and DIF as project partners in Europeana DSI, and the conditions for subcontracting.

Europeana DSI 2 (July 2016- August 2017)
Funding for The European Film Gateway will be continued under Europeana DSI 2: “Access to digital resources of European heritage”. ACE and DIF will continue the work carried out under DSI 1: Innovate the aggregation infrastructure, optimize relationship with data providers, and improve data quality and add new content. Under DSI 2 the overall budget has been cut, and for EFG the cut amounts to 28 % compared to DSI 1. Subcontracting is not foreseen, but ACE will again distribute 11,000 EURO for data enrichment and new data contributions to EFG partners.
An EFG information meeting for data providers and interested ACE members will be held on 28 June 2016 in Bologna.
