ABCinema (2014–2016)

Project duration: 1 July 2014 – 30 September 2015
ABCinema Plus: 1 October 2015 – 30 September 2016
Programme: Audience development – Film literacy ( Creative Europe – MEDIA subprogramme)
Partners: Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna (Co-ordinator), Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique (Brussels), Deutsches Filminstitut (Frankfurt), Les enfants de cinema (Paris), EYE Film Institute Netherlands (Amsterdam), Watershed (Bristol)

Key objective of this pilot project is to explore new and creative approaches to film literacy, inspiring the next generation of movie goers to get curious and excited about cinema as an art form and as part of Europe’s cultural memory.  By coordinating the efforts of 6 leading European Film Archives and cultural cinema organisations, this project will foster pan-European collaboration, peer-to-peer learning and add value to partners’ activities in film literacy.

The key tasks of ABCinema are to

  • create an online catalogue of films selected for their relevance in film history or as a tool for teaching film language
  • editorialise the content (focus on movies, contextualization, educational tools…)
  • engage children, young people and teachers in the ongoing development of the catalogue, by creating focus groups to ensure that the content is relevant, inspiring a creative and critical thinking
  • promote the film catalogue and the outcomes of the activities
  • R&D into young audience development

Each partner has chosen a different target group ranging from preschool children to young adults outside the school environnement. Together with teachers and film literacy experts, the project establishes a shared catalogue of European films and film related material. In the first and second year of the project partners have organised workshops to exchange best practices across sectors and borders:
