FORWARD – Framework for an EU-wide Audiovisual Orphan Works Registry (2013–2017)

The FORWARD project ran from July 2013 until January 2017.  It has been in initiated by ACE and funded by the Community programme ICT-PSP as a Pilot B project.

The most important outcome of the project is the FORWARD tool, a solution to help film and AV archives to
  • put the Directive 2012/28/EU into practice
  • streamline the identification Orphan Works
  • ensure that the compulsory Diligent Search is performed as prescribed by the Directive and according to national legislations
THE FORWARD SYSTEM is designed to support users in:

  • assessing the rights status of an audiovisual work: is it in-copyright or public domain?
  • performing a Diligent Search on in-copyright, potential audiovisual Orphan Works
  • deciding whether a work subjected is orphan, partially orphan, or not orphan.
